Album Review

Bill Maier – Crunchy, Deep-Fried and Smothered

One of the coolest aspects of doing album reviews is that once in a while, you get to hear something that is just a little bit different from the rest of the pack. Hailing from the most “Country” of all places—Long Island, Maier has quite the way with crafting a song—but also a pretty good way of singing it as well.

I also like the artwork of this CD—-comparing it to a restaurant. It’s a very novel approach, but unless the music is first-class, it wouldn’t have made the reviews page, right? So, let’s take a look inside.

The disc is chock full of songs that are great showcases for his talents. Whether a fun, light-hearted track like “Crazy Like That” or “Flip Flops And Underwear,” he can make you smile with his writing, but it’s his vocalizing that really left a mark on me. Songs like “Look At Us Now” and the brilliant “When Autumn Leaves” are as strong lyrically and sonically as anything you would hear on mainstream radio today.

One piece of advice—–buy this CD. But, don’t listen to the title track on an empty stomach….It just might make you hungry, but once you’ve listened—-I think you’ll be going through the musical buffet line a couple times more!
